Aldous Huxley

The Perennial Philosophy

The Perennial Philosophy is defined by its author as "The metaphysic that recognizes a divine Reality substantial to the world of things and lives and minds." With great wit and stunning intellect, Aldous Huxley examines the spiritual beliefs of various religious traditions and explains them in terms that are personally meaningful.

One of the classics in integral thought, Huxley's book is a must-read not only for those who seek a common thread in the great spiritual beliefs of the world but those who strive for truth. In The Perennial Philosophy, Eastern and Western thoughts no longer collide but become merely manners in which we satisfy the yearning for higher consciousness or God through human experience. We highly recommend this book for both the beginner or the advanced seeker.

Steven Forrest

Steven received a B.A. in Religion in 1971 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and shortly thereafter began to establish his astrological practice. In 1984, Bantam Books published his first book, The Inner Sky.Esquire magazine called it "intelligent, well-written and actually fun." That volume was followed in 1986 by The Changing Sky. In 1988, with his wife, Jodie Forrest, he released the third volume of the popular Sky trilogy, Skymates (now out of print. A new, expanded version was published by Seven Paws Press in late 2001.)  Steven's fourth book was published by ACS in May 1993. Titled The Night Speaks, it is an extended argument for the intellectual and philosophical plausibility of astrology. His fifth work, The Book of Pluto, was released in May 1995.  Regarding that book, HOROSCOPE magazine described Steven as "not only a premier astrologer, but also a wise man." Measuring the Night: Evolutionary Astrology and the Keys to the Soul, by Steven Forrest and Jeffrey Wolf Green, is based on a series of lectures the authors did together and was co-published by Seven Paws Press and Daemon Press. In 2002, Seven Paws Press published Steven's first novel, Stalking Anubis, a murder mystery featuring astrologer-detective Plato Mims. In 2004, Seven Paws Press published Rafael Nasser's Under One Sky, featuring a chapter by Steven. 2005 has seen the release of volume two of the revised and expanded Skymates -- Skymates: The Composite Chart.

Steven is currently Chair of the Kepler College Advisory Council, which is part of an effort to open an accredited astrologically-oriented university in Seattle, WA.  Steven is leading three Apprenticeship Programs, two based in CA and one in Kansas City, KS.  Steven won the 1985 Professional Astrologers Incorporated Award for "Outstanding Contribution to the Art and Science of Astrology," and was nominated for a United Astrology Congress Regulus Award in 1992 and 1995.  Of Steven's work, Sting says that he "...manages to disarm the sceptic, as well as debunk the charlatanism that surrounds popular astrology, with language that is as intelligent and cogent as it is poetic."

The Inner Sky and The Book of Pluto

These fantastic books on astrology by Steven Forrest are our favorites. A far cry from the more textbook types of astrology primers, The Inner Sky leads the beginner through fundamental concepts with plain language and humor. Advanced astrologers will appreciate his evolutionary approach to interpretation. And speaking of humor, who would've ever thought that anyone could make Pluto entertaining? We simply loved The Book of Pluto for its honesty and levity. Highly recommended as well as his many other books.

Ron Roth

Ron Roth, Ph.D., the author of several books, is an internationally known teacher, spiritual healer, and modern-day mystic who has appeared on many television and radio programs. He served in the Roman Catholic priesthood for more than 25 years and is the founder of the Celebrating Life Institute in Peru, Illinois. Ron regularly gives healing seminars and healing prayer celebrations throughout the country.

Holy Spirit: The Boundless Energy of God (with Peter Occhiogrosso)

Holy Spirit is filled with inspiring information on how to tap into the tremendous power of God. Ron Roth says that anyone who is willing to open their heart, basically having a "heart to heart" with God, can access a direct line to God's power, the Holy Spirit.

Most of the contributors to Halcyon Illuminations have read this book as well as their friends. To realize that the Holy Spirit is referred to, in ancient texts, in the feminine was wowing indeed. Roth and Occiogrosso help the reader to understand the Holy Spirit without religious dogma and to experience it in its purest, sublime form.

Joseph Campbell

The Power of Myth
book and DVD

Campbell and student-journalist Bill Moyers (recorded in the two years preceding Campbell's death in 1988) covers a galaxy of topics related to Campbell's central themes: Mythology is humanity's universal method of seeking the transcendental, and "follow your bliss" is the timeless formula for spiritual satisfaction. An exhilarating journey into the mind and spirit of a remarkable man, a legendary teacher, and a masterful storyteller, conducted by TV journalist Bill Moyers in the acclaimed PBS series. Includes The Hero's Adventure, The Message of the Myth, The First Storytellers, Sacrifice and Bliss, Love and the Goddess, Masks of Eternity.

This timeless classic is one we've recommended a zillion times over the decades, but we all agree that there's nothing more wonderful than seeing the mythology master, Joseph Campbell, and hearing the genuine enthusiasm in his explanations of world myths in relation to our common human experience.

DVD

What The Bleep Do We Know?

"WHAT THE #$*! DO WE KNOW?!" is a radical departure from convention. It demands a freedom of view and greatness of thought so far unknown, indeed, not even dreamed of since Copernicus. It's a documentary. It's a story. It's mind-blowing special effects. This film plunges you into a world where quantum uncertainty is demonstrated - where neurological processes, and perceptual shifts are engaged and lived by its protagonist - where everything is alive, and reality is changed by every thought.

After this movie first came out in DVD, was more widely viewed, and therefore, more discussed, the commentary we heard had such a range.  Some loved it, believing it completely; others were appalled by its assumptions. A few of us decided to watch it, and not surprisingly, some of us were moved while others thought the ideas rather hokey. This being the case, we recommend that you give it a shot, and we'll tell you why:

Either it'll change your life, or it won't. Considering that the probability of an event being life-changing rarely totes  50/50 odds, we figured you just might want to take the leap.
